Summary:
This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended-Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer-one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack-and the man-she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

Blurb: Fans of Nightshade won't be disappointed. Wolfsbane will leave them howling for more.

I CAN'T PROMISE THIS REVIEW WILL BE SPOILER-FREE IF YOU HAVEN'T READ NIGHTSHADE. IT WILL BE SPOILER-FREE FOR WOLFSBANE.

Review: HOLY CARP! I lurved this book. One of my favorite things about fantasy/dystopia books is learning about the world of the book. Wolfsbane is the most interesting history book you will ever read. So much history and past turmoils that all come together in an action-packed, kick-butt story!

We also get introduced to some great new characters in this book. The Searchers are pretty fun people! I loved meeting them, and seeing what happened to some of my favorite characters from the previous book.

It wasn't perfect, hence the 4 star. Calla is a weird emotional mess in this book: AND SHE TOTALLY HAS A RIGHT TO BE. Her whole world has totally turned upside-down. However, after a while I had a hard time relating to her. I wanted her to be the Calla I knew and loved. Oh. And this book fell victim to a little sequel-phase. But that didn't bother me so bad. Especially with the twist at the end. Who-boy!

This is also very much a bridge book. Nightshade ended with a plot twist, and Wolfsbane ends with a plot twist, but in-between there is very little plot-twisting. We learn a lot about the characters and the history of the world, we have a lot of things set up from some future plot-twists, but this book is fairly straight forward. Nothing major happens until the end. But that's what a lot of sequels do, so I was expecting it.

All in all, a great sequel, and the perfect setup for Bloodrose. Can't wait!

Summary:
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
Blurb: Fast paced, well woven, and completely engrossing. This book certainly lives up to its name.

Review: I know this book doesn't come out for five months, but as I didn't recieve this copy for review I don't feel bad about reviewing it super-early. Someone has to, right?

ANYWAY. I loved this book. From the very first page I was hooked. I love that this book is told from the alternating views of a criminal legend, and a "police" legend. It was fascinating to see how both were very similar people who had been drastically changed by their circumstances. Maybe Day would have been a famous guardsman if he had lived June's life, and vice versa.

What makes this story GREAT is those two characters. The plotline itself is rather generic. Dystopian government, at war with some other country, some people live lives of luxury while others die of plague. Ya know. That story. But seen through the eyes of our narrators what seems** like a generic story becomes something fresh and wonderful and fascinating. I couldn't take my eyes off this book. Hence, the Squeaky rating.

So even though this book doesn't come out until November, you should pre-order it now. It's THAT good.

**I feel bad when I say this story seems generic. After all, since all of these dystopias are coming out at relatively the same time you know that Marie didn't read any of the other current popular dystopias before she wrote this one, there just isn't time! If this book had come out two years ago then it would have been the "original" one. Please note that I am not trying to offend anyone by calling it generic. I hope y'all can tell how much I loved this book.

Summary:
Willa is lucky: She has a loving blended family that gets along. Not all families are so fortunate. The estranged father she hardly remembers has murdered his new wife and children, and is headed east toward Willa and her mother.

Under police protection, Willa discovers that her mother has harbored secrets that are threatening to boil over. Has everything Willa believed about herself been a lie? As Willa sets out to untangle the mysteries of her past, she keeps her own secret—one that has the potential to tear her family apart.

Blurb: Haunting and heartrending, Blood Wounds will keep you thinking long after you turn the last page.

Review: Reading this book I was reminded of why I don't read contemporary fiction. I just don't understand it. That's why I gave this book 2.5 stars, because I had no idea what to give it and figured smack in the middle made sense.

The book was a little disappointing in that the main conflict is solved very quickly, and the rest of the book is all about the characters and their relationships and emotions. This book is certainly emotional. So many different thoughts and feelings flying here and there. Lies uncovered, relationships found and lost, and so many SAD people. So depressing. My mom read it as well, and we talked about it for a while after reading it. There was plenty to discuss.

However, one thing we both agreed on is... well... there didn't really seem to be a point. I finished the book and thought "Okay. What was I supposed to take away from that?"

THAT is almost 100% the reason I don't read contemporary fiction. In fantasy, I am more than happy to finish a book and just say "that was a good story." But for some reason, contemporary fiction makes me feel like there needs to be some kind of message in the book. Some purpose in me reading it. (I know not everyone feels this way. That's my issue) But I couldn't find the purpose for this one.

The book ended after showing us how messed up all these people are, and by the end they still seemed pretty messed up. Yes, there was a bit of healing going on, but not enough to make me feel hopeful.

All in all I kind of felt like this was a non-story because all it did was make me feel sad. I didn't feel sad for anyone or about anything. I just felt sad. The sadness didn't make me want to tell my family I love them, or call up forgotten friends, it just depressed me. Kind of like the last two books of Pfeffer's Life as We Knew It series made me feel.

However, like I said, I am no one to judge contemporary fiction. So... take this review with a grain of salt.

The Drake Chronicles-- Alyxandra Harvey

Release Date: 2009-2010
Genre:  Romance, Vampires, Paranormal
Publisher: Bloomsbury/Walker
Pages: 256, 308, 254
Average Rating:
Amazon Link*: Book 1, Book 2, Book 3 (Book 1 currently on sale for $4!)
Goodreads Page: Book 1, Book 2, Book 3
Summary:
The Drakes are an ancient and powerful vampire family, which isn't as fun as it may sound. In this family, vampire children are born rather than created. Throughout this series we follow the lives of all eight of the Drake children, their warrior parents, and a hilarious cast of crazy aunts and uncles and cousins. In the span of a few weeks an ancient prophecy is fulfilled, a great evil is stirred up, and a conspiracy revealed. And kissing. LOTS of kissing.
Blurb: You don't have to love vampires to love this series, you just have to love having a good time.

Review: I read these books back to back to back, so I figured I might as well review them all in one fell swoop!

I decided to read this series after I finished The Demon King, because I needed to read a book in which I had absolutely NO expectations. I knew these books would be total fluff, and very cheesy. I was right, and completely satisfied!

These are the perfect beach-reads. You can find a comfy spot and be prepared to laugh, snort, gasp, and so much more.

Some of you may think that by reading these books I have lifted my ban on paranormal romance. Not so! Those of you who really understood the two rants leading to the ban know that I don't have anything against paranormal romance, I just have something against books that say they are pure paranormal, and turn into nothing but romance.

This series didn't pretend to be anything it wasn't. You knew it was going to be almost 100% romance, and it was. The romance was pleasantly laughable and charming. I did chuckle quite a few times. Especially in the second book.

Each book is told through the eyes of one of the Drake siblings, and [usually] their love interest. This gave each book a fresh voice. Even though the books follow essentially the same model, by having new narrators every time the books avoid becoming predictable and corny.

All in all I was very pleased with this series, and it was exactly what I needed to remember why I love reading.

AWESOME PICTURE BOOK!

Hey, y'all! I just want to take a moment to promote the following book:
Scapegoat: The Story of a Goat Named Oat and a Chewed-up Coat
By Dean Hale

If the TITLE doesn't make you want to buy this book, then I don't know what will. Except perhaps them AWESOME story.

I have read this book, but I have no idea how to review picture books, so this is not a review. It is just me saying that Dean Hale is awesome and you need to go buy his book right now.

If you want proof of his awesomeness you should check out this post by Shannon Hale (his wife) and this post by Dean. And while you're visiting dreadcrumbs you should read some of the past posts and be OVERWHELMED by his awesomeness.

If you know a kid, or if you have an inner kid, then you should buy this book. It's hilarious, and the phonetics in it are great for kids learning language, and adults looking for a laugh.

This is all I have to say on the subject. Go buy the book.

Hey, y'all,

I'm in a major read-a-thon hangover. Trying to get through all of the links and pick winners is probably going to take up most of my time this week (Mr. Linkys are not as nice as Google Docs). Don't expect to see winners until the end of this week. Maybe we'll see them earlier than that, but probably not.

Hope you all had fun!

FINISH LINE! SiS Read-a-thon Report #2

The read-a-thon is officially over! Feel free to keep reading, but from now on your reading no longer qualifies you for the "most read" prize. You have until MIDNIGHT MST to post this update, which gives you 4 hours. But remember ONLY READING DONE PRIOR TO RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE (8:00pm MST) counts. I don't really have any way of making sure you do this, but I like to think people are honest.

Here's the questions for Report #2. These reports are for my benefit. This is the first read-a-thon I have ever participated in (so it's obviously the first one I've hosted). I'm still learning! Your answers will make the next read-a-thon even better! SO BE HONEST. You won't hurt my feelings. I promise.

  1. First of all, give us an end-of-read-a-thon status update. Books read, pages read, you know the drill!
  2. What is your favorite book you read during the read-a-thon?
  3. Did you participate in any mini-challenges? Which ones?
  4. Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
  5. What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
  6. Are you satisfied with how much reading you got done? Did you do more than you expected? Less?
  7. What did you think of the updates? Too close together? Didn't like the time limit?
  8. If you could change one thing about the read-a-thon, what would it be?
  9. Would you participate in another read-a-thon hosted by Squeaky Books? Why or why not? (Again, I won't cry if you say "no")
  10. Any last comments on the read-a-thon?

MY ANSWERS:
(if these are blank that means I haven't gotten home yet. Hopefully I'll fill them in soon!)

First of all, give us an end-of-read-a-thon status update. Books read, pages read, you know the drill!
Update:
  • Total Books Read: 3
  • Total Pages Read: 1,167
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 1
  • Pages Read since last update: 33
  • Total time read: 13 hours
  • How I'm currently feeling: Feeling pretty nauseous due to poor eating habits today. Too sick to read in the car, so I only read 33 pages. A bowl of cottage cheese and some ibuprofen has made me right as rain!
  • Books read: finished the last 30 pages of Legend by Marie Lu, Blood Wounds by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer, and The Roar by Emma Clayton.
What is your favorite book you read during the read-a-thon?
  • I really liked Wolfsbane. A great continuation of a great series.
Did you participate in any mini-challenges? Which ones?
  • Why yes, yes I did. All of them. I sort of had to. *wink*
Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
  • Hm... I still really liked the picture puzzle one.
What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
  • It was nice to have a justified reason to just sit and read. I've never done anything like this before.
Are you satisfied with how much reading you got done? Did you do more than you expected? Less?
  • The first day was REALLY disappointing. I hardly got even 2 hours of reading in. However, my goal was 1,000 pages, and I met it. But I know that if I had read the WHOLE read-a-thon, I could have easily doubled that.
  • I brought a lot of really short (meaning around 200 pages) books for the read-a-thon, because I thought I would feel more fulfilled if I read more books. Instead, I ended up reading two of the largest books in my pile. But if I HAD read 200-page books, I would have read aroud 5 or 6, instead of just three. So I guess I still feel pretty fulfilled.
What did you think of the updates? Too close together? Didn't like the time limit?
  • I think I made a mistake in tying the updates and the mini-challenges together. And the two hour time limit wasn't as nice as I thought it would be. If/when I host another read-a-thon, I'm definitely going to reconsider the format of the updates. I think maybe once every FOUR hours would be better than every two.
If you could change one thing about the read-a-thon, what would it be?
  • I would make sure that I had BOTH days available. And I would change the frequency of the updates as mentioned before.
Would you participate in another read-a-thon hosted by Squeaky Books? Why or why not? (Again, I won't cry if you say "no")
  • I don't think I would. If I'm being completely honest, I think Squeaky Books is a joke, and Enna Isilee is a jerk. (I didn't really write this survey for myself... awkward.)
Any last comments on the read-a-thon?
  • THANK YOU to everyone who participated. I honestly didn't think I'd have anywhere CLOSE to this many people reading with me. I was hoping for around 20, and I got nearly 200 people who signed up! It was a great first experience.
  • Please give me some time to pick giveaway winners and such. I'm not even going to give you a "this is when they will be announced" date, because I'd like to take the time to go through all the links, and comment on all of your blogs. And that should take me a while.
THANK YOU ALL!

Link up to your end-of-read-a-thon reports here! Remember you have until MIDNIGHT MST which is 4 hours from the posting of this. (Some leniency will be given to those in weird time zones who are currently asleep, etc.)

SiS Read-a-thon Update #11

ONLY TWO HOURS REMAINING

It's time for the eleventh update & mini-challenge! Here's your challenge: If you could live in the world of one book, which would it be and why?

Here's my update and mini challenge answer!

Update:
  • Total Books Read: 2
  • Total Pages Read: 1,134
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 0
  • Pages Read since last update: 197
  • Total time read: 12.5 hours
  • How I'm currently feeling: I'm feeling great! But my hotel is kicking me out now. That's why this post is late, the wifi turned off and I'm typing this on my phone. I'm going to go home now, maybe I'll read in the car. Don't worry. I'm not driving.
Mini Challenge:
I had to think about this for a long time. Most of the books I read have worlds that are not-so-pleasant. That's why they're interesting books! I stared at my shelves for a few minutes, and eventually decided that living in the world of Harry Potter would be the coolest, but that felt like cheating. So I went with the world of Divergent. Even though there is some serious troubles in this world, the world itself is nice. It's organized and neat. And I love the factions.

I know one world I would definitely NOT want to live in, though...

If YOU participate in this update and mini-challenge, you will be entered to win a SIGNED copy of The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan! Link to your post below in the Mr. Linky.

If you want to link to your post, but do not want to be entered to win The Forest of Hands and Teeth, merely place two asterisks before your Mr. Linky  entry.

SiS Read-a-thon Update #10

It's time for the tenth update & mini-challenge! Here's your challenge: Tell me, what is the funniest/most inspiring thing you have read so far in the read-a-thon?

Here's my update and mini challenge answer!

Update:
  • Total Books Read: 2
  • Total Pages Read: 937
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 0
  • Pages Read since last update: 181
  • Total time read: 10.5 hours
  • Currently Reading: The Roar by Emma Clayton
  • How I'm currently feeling: I'm feeling good! The book I'm reading is really WIERD though. It's kind of like enders game, but has too much experimenting on children for my taste. Over half-way done, though! I'm definitely going to reach my goal!
Mini Challenge:
The three books I've read so far haven't really been funny or insipring... one was about a cutter-girl, one was about an extremely distressed wolf-girl, and one is about experimenting on and kidnapping children. There was one pretty funny character in Wolfsbane. Lots of mooning and inappropriate jokes. I chuckled a couple times.

If YOU participate in this update and mini-challenge, you will be entered to win a copy of How to take the Ex out of Ex-Boyfriend by Janette Rallison! Link to your post below in the Mr. Linky.

If you want to link to your post, but do not want to be entered to win How to take the Ex out of Ex-Boyfriend, merely place two asterisks before your Mr. Linky  entry.

  • Total Pages Read: 756
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 1
  • Pages Read since last update: 160
  • Total time read: 8.5 hours
  • Currently Reading: The Roar by Emma Clayton
  • How I'm currently feeling: For some reason I actually feel really grumpy. I think it's because the only thing I could find to eat (that sounded good) was an 80 calorie soup-to-go and some candy. I need real food! But it's not stopping my reading!
Mini Challenge:

SiS Read-a-thon Update #8

The giveaway associated with this update is INTERNATIONAL ONLY, but anyone can participate in the update.

It's time for the eighth update & mini-challenge! Here's your challenge: If you had bookshelves FULL of all of your favorite books, how would you organize them?

  • Pages Read since last update: 200
  • Total time read: 7 hours
  • How I'm currently feeling: Feeling good! That last 2 hour period was the best for me. I'm heading out into town now to find some lunch, then I'll be back for more reading!
Mini Challenge:
  • I'm MAJOR OCD when it comes to my books. I have to organize by author's last name and it has to be perfect. If there are more by the same author, I either organize them by the order of the series, or alphabetically by title.
If YOU participate in this update and mini-challenge, you will be entered to win any book of your choice under $15 from The Book Depository. Giveaway open anywhere the Book Depository ships.

If you are international, link in this Mr. Linky:

SiS Read-a-thon Update #7

It's time for the seventh update & mini-challenge! Here's your challenge: Name one book you think should be taught in school, grade of your choice.

Here's my update and mini challenge answer!
Update:
  • Total Books Read: 1
  • Total Pages Read: 396
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 0
  • Pages Read since last update: 38
  • Total time read: 5
  • What I'm currently reading: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer
  • How I'm currently feeling: I got distracted this morning. I spent a while checking the tweets/updates from last night, then took a shower, then had a nutritious breakfast of a pizza Lunchable and a protien shake (I've NEVER had a pancake that was worth $12). But now I'm sitting in my hotel, ready to read, and with a great view:

Mini Challenge:
  • I have two books that I would put into this category, both for high-school grades. The first is Life of Pi. This book was not only a great and gripping read, but when I finished it I just HAD to talk to someone about it. I couldn't WAIT to get to class to discuss. And there's SO MUCH to discuss! It's still one of my favorite books.
  • The second book would be The Book Thief. This book is so powerful, and one THE BEST historical fiction novel I have ever read. It is long, which might daunt some students, but the story is also very gripping.
  • My only fear is that students might just automatically resent these books if they were assigned reading. But I guess that's a risk with any book.

If YOU participate in this update and mini-challenge, you will be entered to win a SIGNED copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak! Link to your post below in the Mr. Linky.

If you want to link to your post, but do not want to be entered to win The Book Thief, merely place two asterisks before your Mr. Linky  entry.

SiS Read-a-thon Update #6

Good morning everyone! How was your sleep? Did you sacrifice sleep for the sake of reading? Good for you! I can't do that, personally, but I admire those who can.

It's time for the sixth update & mini-challenge! This challenge is brought to you by Ambur. Here's your challenge: Put two characters from different series together (romantically or otherwise) and describe why they would be good together.

Here's my update and mini challenge answer!

Update:
  • Total Books Read: 1
  • Total Pages Read: 358
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 1
  • Pages Read since last update: 181
  • Total time read: 4.5 hours
  • Currently Reading: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer
  • How I'm currently feeling: I went to sleep fairly early so that I could be totally alert today (I read a lot faster if I'm well rested). I'm still trying to rub the sleep from my eyes, but I'm gonna hop in the shower and that should wake me up and get me ready for a great day of reading!
Mini Challenge:
  • This was a lot harder than I thought it would be! Eventually I decided to put together Enna (from the Books of Bayern) and Yelena (from the Poison Study series). I just think these girls would make a kick-butt team! They've both got magical powers, and they're both fierce fighters.

If YOU participate in this update and mini-challenge, you will be entered to win a ARC of Plain Kate by Erin Bow! Link to your post below in the Mr. Linky.

If you want to link to your post, but do not want to be entered to win Plain Kate, merely place two asterisks before your Mr. Linky  entry.

EXAMPLE: **Enna Isilee @ Squeaky Books will NOT enter you to win but Enna Isilee @ Squeaky Books WILL enter you to win.

This giveaway is for bloggers and NON-bloggers. Non-bloggers should post their match-up in the comments.

This giveaway will only be open until Update #7 is posted at 10:00am MST.

As always, be sure that you have read and understand everything in the STUFF TO KNOW post.

SiS Read-a-thon Report #1

It's the end of Day #1 and it's report time! Remember, you MUST do this if you want to be considered for the "most read" prize at the end. Answer the following seven questions and then put your links below! You have 12 hours to do this, until day 2 starts. My answers are below the questions.

UPDATE: Some of you are expressing some confusion. The posting of report #1 does not mean you have to stop reading, it just means that the updates/mini-challenges are done for today. As the post says, you have 12 hours to post this update. You can do it now, or you can do it at 7:59am MST right before Day 2 officially begins. It's your choice. Feel free to keep reading until you fall asleep with the book on your face. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STOP READING. I'm just going to stop posting. Comprende?

  1. First of all, give us an end-of-day status update. Books read, pages read, you know the drill!
  2. What is the favorite thing you have read today?
  3. Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
  4. What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
  5. What has been your LEAST favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
  6. Are you on track to meet your goals?
  7. Will you be participating tomorrow? Do you have any new goals?

First of all, give us an end-of-day status update. Books read, pages read, you know the drill!
  • Total Books Read: 0
  • Total Pages Read: 177
  • Books Read Since Last Update: 0
  • Pages Read since last update: 100
  • Total time read: 2 hour
  • What I'm currently reading: Blood Wounds
  • How I'm currently feeling: After my ridiculously busy day I totally fell asleep during that last 2 hour break. Feeling ashamed of my poor progress today.
What is the favorite thing you have read today?
Well, seeing as the only think I've read to day is Blood Wounds (and I haven't even finished that!), I guess I'm going to say: Blood Wounds.

Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
I loved the creativity people had with the picture puzzle, but the wordle was also really fun. Dunno if I can choose.

What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
Being in this hotel room is really cool. But the beds are a little TOO comfy. I'm trying to stay awake! It's only 8:00pm!

What has been your LEAST favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
This is less to do with the read-a-thon, and more with me. I wish I had better prepared for the morning. That Dr.'s appointment really threw off my day.

Are you on track to meet your goals?
HECK no. If I want to meet my goal I need to read 800 pages tomorrow. I know I can do it, though, if I really put the pedal to the metal.

Will you be participating tomorrow? Do you have any new goals?
Yes, and READ MORE!
