Harry Potter World!

Today I depart on a journey that will change my life.

That's right.

I'm going to Harry Potter World.

I have no idea what to expect or what to do! I won't actually get there until Sunday, but I'm hoping some of you might have advice or recommendations on what to focus on when I do get there. Please, guide me! What are your favorite parts?

TV Tuesday: Beautiful Creatures the Movie

So the results of my poll were varied enough that I am NOT going to be inundating you with tons of new posts about sewing, costumes, and anime/TV. However, I will be doing SOME. I'm going to start a new feature called TV Tuesday. I don't know if I'll do this every Tuesday, or if this will be the only one. But I like TV/Movies, and I want to talk about them.

This first TV Tuesday is book themed, but I can't promise it always will be.

Without further ado, let's talk about the travesty that was the Beautiful Creatures movie.

Now, I ADORE these books. I've only had a chance to read #1 & #2, but I own all of them and can't wait to get to them. I was really excited to see this movie, but wasn't able to see it in theatres. So last week I rented it and watched it with my mom.

When the movie was over, my mom asked me "Do you think it was a good movie?" And honestly, I couldn't answer her yes or no because I was too distracted on how TERRIBLE an adaptation it was. I'm not going to talk about the acting, I'm not going to talk about the effects or the dialogue. I'm gonna stick with what I know best, which is books.

It was almost like the movie was based on the book, but not quite. So many things were off that I just basically sat with my mouth open the whole time. I had no idea what was going on. I won't list specific things that were off, because I don't want to spoil the book for those who haven't read it.

The best way I can describe my experience with this movie is through an analogy:

Imagine you are listening to the radio, and your favorite song comes on. You start singing along (because OF COURSE you know all the words), and because you're singing along it takes you a while to realize that the words coming out of your radio are not the same words coming out of your mouth. But because you were singing, you have no idea what words WERE coming out of the radio. And suddenly you're just lost and confused. What happened to your song?!

That's how I felt about this movie. So when my mom asked me "Do you think it was a good movie?" I had no idea. Because I was so distracted by what I expected to happen, that I couldn't even comprehend what actually happened.

Usually I have to explain things to people after we see book-movies. Because there are holes in the plot that I can fill in having read the book, but they can't. It was the opposite with this one. My brain kept trying to fill in the holes that the movie made, but then the movie would fill it in with something else. The result: brain overload.

Just to let you know, my mom did like the movie. She didn't love the movie, but she said she liked the story well enough. So if you haven't read the books, maybe you'll like the movie. THEN GO READ THE BOOKS. If you have already read the books and you watch this movie... buckle up. Don't be like me and expect to see the story adapted. Just go in expecting to see a movie and maybe you'll do better.

What about y'all? Did anyone see this? Have you read the books? What did you think?

New non-book content?

Hey y'all, I know I haven't been super-duper active recently, even after I said I would. The truth is two-fold: 1) spring term and crazy job situations have melted my brain, and 2) I've actually started reading less and doing... other things?

What other things, you ask? Well, it's a little strange actually. After my Halloween adventures in costume making I kind of became... obsessed. And if you're going to dress up like random characters, watching anime just kind of comes with the territory. I didn't do anything like this as a kid or teen, and so all of the floodgates have opened. I know it's weird. Believe me. I know.

SO, that brings me to my question: I hopefully post more often when spring term ends (one more week!) and my friends move back home (so lonely, need books!). But, I would DEFINITELY post more often if I were to post about some of the new things I'm into. BUT, those aren't exactly book related.

So if you wouldn't mind taking a couple seconds to take this little survey. I'd be much obliged. Please be honest. This may be MY blog, but I do it for YOU readers. I will listen to you, promise!

Revealed today was ANOTHER super-secret project from Shannon! This one looks SOOO cute! At first the idea of her partnering with Mattel turned me off (anyone else remember the barbie Princess Academy thing?) but after reading about it I am 100% on board!

Click the image for Shanon's post and more details!

I dunno if I can handle all the Shannon Hale awesomeness happening in the next couple years. My heart may explode!

Summary:
The year is 2051, and the world is still recognizable. With the help of her mysterious classmate Dylan Gilmore, Faith Daniels discovers that she can move objects with her mind. This telekinetic ability is called a “pulse,” and Dylan has the talent, too.

In riveting action scenes, Faith demonstrates her ability to use her pulse against a group of telekinesis masters so powerful they will flatten their enemies by uprooting street lights, moving boulders, and changing the course of a hurtling hammer so that it becomes a deadly weapon. But even with great talent, the mind—and the heart—can be difficult to control. If Faith wants to join forces with Dylan and save the world, she’ll have to harness the power of both.
Blurb: Is this a movie, or a book? And no, that's not a good thing.

Review: Sorry to be posting so many "didn't love it" reviews lately, but... I didn't love this book. And if I had read that plot summary before I started reading, I probably would guessed that I wouldn't like this book before I even read it. Any book that feels the need to put "in riveting action scenes" in their summary... probably isn't for me.

It wasn't that it wasn't a good story, it had a lot of potential. But I felt like I was reading a movie screenplay with how bluntly descriptive it was. I never really knew what was happening in the world because the author left this so vague. I think that can work for a movie, because while the main characters are talking on the screen you can see the world around them and make your own assumptions. But in a book... all you have is what is written on the page, and it wasn't enough in this one.

I felt like this would translate really well into a movie, but left my brain feeling tired by how much I had to infer. Because of this abrupt and blunt way of describing both characters and actions, I never really felt like I connected with any of the characters or story. Because of this, I have no desire to go on and read any other books in this series.
