H-hello? Can I come back now?

Um... hello. Long time no see, eh? How have you been? I've been good. Keeping busy, ya know. Yeah...

PLEASE TAKE ME BACK!

At the risk of sounding like a needy ex, I think I'm ready to get back into blogging, but also fearful that I've been gone too long. I'm SO out of the loop!

And that's why I need your help. If you're willing, here's how you can help me:

1st: Let me know if you're still here! I'm fairly positive that I've lost all my readers.

2nd: Let me know which book blogs are your favorite. I've completely lost all my Google reader data, and I'm just starting on Feedly. So I need to buff up my reading supply.

3rd: What have you been reading! What's new? What's exciting? What's awful?

I can't promise that I'll be posting A TON, but I am trying to ease myself back into the blogging scene. I've started reading in earnest again, and I MISS YOU! There's been a part of my life missing ever since I stopped blogging. And even though I've picked up some new hobbies there's still a space in my heart reserved strictly for my book blogging buddies.

So help me! Please?

How badly do you hate Captcha?

I've been getting a TON of spam comments since I took off captcha. Now, it's worth it to me if y'all really hate captcha. But... let me know how much you hate it, please. If don't want me to turn it back on, I won't. If you don't care, I'm bringing it back.

Seriously. I will do whatever you tell me.

(Also, I've had a really crazy last few weeks since school got out, but I've got a lot of stuff scheduled for next week and the weeks following. So FOR REAL, I'm coming back in full force soon.)

Year in Review: 2012

This hasn't been my best year in blogging. I think I definitely slacked off a bit (senior year, ya know). Hopefully 2013 will be even better!

Hiatus

You may have noticed my absence (or more likely, you didn't). Somehow I managed to only have ONE final this semester, but that means that all my other classes have huge projects due the last week of class (this week).

Instead of limping along this week I'm just going to declare a week on hiatus for Squeaky Books. While I'm gone PLEASE vote for your favorite YA books of 2012!

I'll be back on Monday (12/10) with fun stuff!

1,000th Post

This is my 1,000th post. I wanted it to be awesome. I wanted it to be memorable, but not corny; give all my readers a million dollars, but not go into debt; funny, but not insincere, etc. etc.

I don't know how to do any of that.

So for my 1,000th post, I'm just going to say: thank you. Thank you to everyone who has been with Squeaky Books for the last five years. Thank you to those of you who only recently discovered it. Thank you to those of you who only came by once and never came back again. Thank you to my friends that I have made on the internet, and thank you to those friends who turned into friends in the "real" world.

Thank you to the publishers. Where would the authors be without you? Thank you to the authors. Where would the readers be without you? I know where I would be, and it isn't good.

Thank you to Twitter. You always are sure that I never have too much spare time. Thank you to audiobooks, without whom I would go insane. No thanks to Facebook, who blocked me as a spammer after just one day of liking my friends' pages.

Thank you to people who read. After going to college I have found that you are in the minority. And thank you to people who read YA with pride. Thank you to people who can disagree respectfully. Thank you to people who can agree enthusiastically. Thank you to people who share their books, I want to be as generous as you someday.

And thank you to dogs. Just 'cause I like them.

Squeaky News contains a brief overview of what has happened on Squeaky Books this month, as well as some other cool things happening around the blogosphere. It sometimes will even have a contest open only to newsletter subscribers (but not every month, it's a surprise!).

The first edition of the revival is going to be going out on May 1st. Just wanted to let you know in case there are some of you who would like to sign up! I couldn't figure out how to embed it in this post, so you'll actually have to come to the website in order to sign up. It's on the left sidebar, just under the social media buttons. You can't miss it!

A great post on Stats

I could write a post today, or I could let Emily do it. She posted an AWESOME post on stats and why they don't matter and we shouldn't let them get us down. I'm totally in the same boat. No matter what I do on my blog it never feels "good enough." That's ridiculous! It's my blog! It's as good as I feel it is. I'm trying harder to stress less about stats, and you should too. :) After all, "How dreary to be somebody, how public like a frog."

Coming soon to Squeaky Books: How I felt about The Hunger Games movie, an IMM vlog, survey results, an awesome giveaway, and a kaboodle of audiobook reviews.

FREEDOM!

Want to know how to get rid of all those blogs you followed once upon a time but now you just want them GONE?! Good news! After much pestering, my Blogging Bud Emily posted how to do it! Pay attention to the part where she metions the "Sites you've joined" page. That's where you can mass-unfollow.

When GFC first came around I LITERALLY went to the YA book blog directory and followed EVERY BLOG. I can't tell you how good it feels to be rid of them. :)

Disabling anonymous comments vs. Captcha

Recently I've been getting a LOT of spam comments with links to things that say "michelle pfieffer nude" etc. I'm debating on what to do. Should I disable anonymous comments (all spam comments so far have been anonymous) or should I put captcha back on? (Captcha is that little code you have to type in to prove you aren't a robot) Captcha is annoying, but If I disable anonymous comments blogger will also disable Name/URL comments. Which means the only people who could comment would be those with google, wordpress, livejournal, typepad, or AIM accounts.

Opinions? Here's a poll:

How should I fight spam comments?

Regarding Content Reviews

Hey y'all, I'm in a hardcore reading slump, and I just can't muster up the energy to write some backlogged audiobook reviews, so I'm posting this instead.

I always try to mention if there's any "innapropriate" content in a book. This is just integrated into my review (should I have a separate section for it in each review?), and it is almost always based on my opinion of what "appropriate" is. I'd like to share a link with you of a GREAT content website

I adore this site. The reason why I love it so much is it is 100% factual. It doesn't say "there was WAY too much profanity in this book" it says, "there was profanity, here's what it was:". It allows the reader to judge for themselves. If you ever are wondering about the content of a YA book, check this site. It's what I always do.

Do you know of any other content review sites (preferably factual ones like PBR)? Leave them in the comments and I'll add them to my list. I think I'll make a page of good content-review sites.

On writing negative reviews

Today I'm going to talk about one of the HARDEST things in book blogging: negative reviews.

Negative reviews have always been particularly hard for me because I have an insatiable need to be liked. If someone ever gives me the slightest impression that they don't like me, I instantly assume the "tail between my legs" posture. Head down, shoulders slumped, maybe some slight whimpering. I hate it.

To compensate for this, I often find myself being very hard-skinned. I pretend that things don't bother me and that I don't care about what people think.

To compensate for that, I'm always very careful about how I word things. If I want to be rude, I'll be rude, but I generally try to keep things polite and considerate. (Because remember that I need people to like me) This works pretty well for me in my real life because I have always been a very good public speaker.

This doesn't work so well for me in blogging. When you write something, you can't add the emphasis you want as delicately as you can while speaking. This is why I italicize a lot of things, in the vain hope that you will understand what I'm trying to get across.

Negative reviews are just a part of blogging. You aren't going to like every book you read. There are some bloggers who choose not to review books they didn't like, but I don't think that's quite fair. If all I ever see online are positive reviews, I'm going to read the book. But what if there are even more people who didn't like the book, but I'll never know because they never posted?! No. It just doesn't work.

When I first started blogging I wasn't afraid to just come out and say "This book sucked." But over the last year or two I've had a revelation that I am under absolutely NO authority to say that. Who am I to judge the character of a book?! No one! I'm some random girlish-woman who likes to read. Not a librarian. Not a publisher. Not even a professional critic. I created a website, and started typing.

If a book is published, that means someone loved it enough for it to see the light of day. That person may be an agent; an editor; or, in the case of self-pubs, an author! Someone loved this book so much that they wanted the whole world to be able to read it. Therefore, who has the right to murder a book by a bad review? No one! Just because you and I aren't friends doesn't mean I'm going to sneak into your room at night and stab you to death!

Therefore, I've started trying my hardest to make sure that people understand that when I write negative reviews I am writing purely from my own perspective. Is everyone going to feel the same way I did? Absolutely not! Will one of my readers read and [hopefully] love the book? Probably!

In all of my negative reviews I always try to include one thing that's positive. For example, in my review of Die for Me I was sure to mention how much I loved the original paranormal twist. And I was also sure to mention that this book came into my hands at a very bad time, when I was coming to the end of my paranormal romance rope. I thought I managed to balance the fact that I didn't like it, but it was still a book worthy of someone's love.

But later that day, my mom told me "Wow. You really didn't like that book."

And that's when I realized that all my efforts might be in vain. Despite the fact that I desperately try to remain kind and courteous while writing a negative review, it is still a negative review. And if people want to see compliments as patronizing, kindness as sarcasm, or gentleness as polished-cruelty, then they're going to! And since you're reading this and not speaking to me face-to-face, my intent could be easily missed. People read into things what they want to. What's important is what you mean.

Therefore, I'm writing this post so that I can link it in my future negative reviews. If you want to believe that I'm trying to be mean or cruel to a book, then there's nothing I can do to stop you. But with all the finality in my body, I declare that I am always trying to be the nicest person I can be. And if I mean to be rude, you won't be able to miss it, but that's a rarity.

However, I am also striving to be as honest as I can be, and therefore I can't just pretend to like everything I read. Some books won't be up my alley. Just because that's true, doesn't mean no one else will like them. Perhaps someone will read my review, and my negativity prompts them to pick up the book. Who knows?!

Negative reviews are hard. They're especially hard when they're for a book by an author you love, or if you want every author to be your best friend (*points at self*). The important thing is to stay true to yourself. For me, myself is someone who wants to be liked, wants to be nice, but also wants to be honest. And that's how I write my reviews, good and bad. Is it easy? NO! I'm terrified every time I post a negative review. But it's what's right for me.

And if you don't like it you're welcome to leave a rude comment, just know that I will then spend the next hour hiding in a corner.

Business Cards Final

I ended up going with the argyle holder. I just couldn't resist the green. I know everyone said paisley here, but on twitter everyone said argyle. I've spent ALL DAY stewing, but finally decided argyle.

And here's the final card:

Got rid of the awkward mission statement and moved the quote to the back so that it could be easily read.

All in all I'm feeling pretty good about these. I'm REALLY nervous that they're going to show up and look TERRIBLE. But, I only paid $10 for 500 of them, so I really can't complain too much.

I keep meaning to do a bookshelf tour, but I want to think of some clever way to do it. Unfortunately, the clever centers in my brain appear to be broken. Maybe someday.

Business Cards

Some of you know that I've REALLY been wanting to make Squeaky Books bookmarks. However, Living Social has a deal (expires soon!) where you can get $50 to VistaPrint for only $10. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE. VistaPrint doesn't do bookmarks, but since this is such a fab deal, I'm willing to switch to business cards. Those are like mini-bookmarks, right? But before I print a bajillion cards, I'd like to get your opinion on them. So here they are, click to enlarge:

What do you think? I know the quote is really tiny. If the print quality is good enough it SHOULD still be readable, though.

Also, I can't decide which business card holder to get. What say you?

Final Layout Poll

All right, y'all. It's been a week. What have we thought of the new layout? Should it stay or go? I've created a poll so that your answers will be obvious. You won't be able to see the poll in a feed reader (you can't see the layout either, for that matter) so please visit the site to vote. And feel free to leave a comment with details.

Your options:

Go back to the old layout
Which had the two sidebars on one side and is often described as being "cluttered" but "original."

OR

Keep the current/new layout
Which y'all can see for yourself.

PLEASE VOTE

Because I am insanely forgetful...

Sorry for the lack of substantial postage today. I've been totally swamped with midterms (I'm currently procrastinating studying for my abstract algebra midterm by writing this post). Today should be my last one for a while, though, so I'll be back.

But the point of this post is to see if there's things I've forgotten (and I KNOW there are). Do I owe you a prize? A guest post? If I do PLEASE e-mail me to remind me. If you haven't gotten it, then I've forgotten. Here's my e-mail:

SqueakyBooks@yahoo.com

The exceptions to this are Q (your copy of Delirium just arrived), Melissa (see you Saturday!), and Alison (Your books should arrive any day). But other than that I don't remember, and don't currently have the brain power to go searching.

Again, PLEASE remind me. I know there are a TON of guest posts that I've forgotten, and I can't find them in my mess of an inbox.

Template Trial-Run

Well, I had a lot of conflicting responses to my "should I change my template" post. Therefore, I have decided to put the possible new template on a trial run. Those of you visiting the site directly will notice that it looks quite different. It still has the same basic color palette, and the same nav buttons, but other than that... mucho chango-d.

I'll be keeping this layout up for a week, and then next Monday I will ask you all what you thought. If I get more people who say "yay!" the new layout will stay. But if people say "no!" the new layout must go.

Tee hee. I'm feeling pretty clever right now.

Anyway. What are some first impressions? Love it? Hate it?

Surveys, prizes, authors, and more!

Do y'all remember how I mentioned that there were some freaking awesome authors coming to my area? Well of course this is a perfect opportunity to give away some books. I was having a hard time thinking of how to do it until I saw [awesome] Emily of Emily's Reading Room post a survey on her blog. This entire giveaway/survey was inspired by her.

I've been blogging for almost 4 years and I've NEVER done one of these. I think it's about time. Basically, you fill out the survey about my blog, and (if you want to) you will be entered to win your choice of one of the following five books:
  • Across the Universe, by Beth Revis
  • Nightshade, by Andrea Cremer
  • Matched, by Ally Condie
  • Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City, by Kirsten Miller
  • Kiki Strike: The Empress' Tomb, by Kirsten Miller
Not only will you get a copy of the book, I will get it SIGNED AND PERSONALIZED to you! Or, if you're going to be at the event, then you can just get a free book! Exciting, eh? All you have to do is fill out the survey.

Please be honest, guys. I swear I won't be mad if you don't like something. I really, truly want your opinions. If you don't want to win the book then you don't have to put your name.

RECAP:
  • I'm asking you to fill out a survey about my blog, please be honest
  • Fill out the last section of the form to be entered to win your choice of the five books listed
  • The book will be signed and personalized to your specifications
