The Dead and the Gone-- Susan Beth Pfeffer
I loved the prequel to this story, Life as We Knew It,
HOWEVER
The Dead and the Gone is no where near as good. Everyone dies, or everyone is gone. I thought the book began with no hope, and it ended with no hope. I didn’t like it at all, the only thing that kept me reading was the thought that surely this must get better. But, no. The. End.

I actually liked this one better than the first, but it was REALLY depressing. I read it shortly after a Hurrican Ike windstorm knocked out our power for a couple of days, and I wanted to go buy eight cases of peanut butter. The students do like this one, but it was dire.
ReplyDeleteThe story was good, yes, but I just didn't like how depressing it was. It was certainly gripping, but it had lost me by the end.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind stories that are a bit of a downer and I actually really, really liked this book. Yeah, it wasn't as good as the companion, but it still had a lot going for it. I loved the relationship the siblings had and how Pfeffer brought religion into the mix. I also really like the feeling of dire need it gives you, as Ms. Yingling mentioned; it wasn't as storng a vibe in this book as the first one, which caused me to unconsciously ration food, but you really felt their fear and pain and uncertainty.
