The Bar Code Tattoo Series-- Suzanne Weyn
The Bar Code Tattoo
In the world of 2025, everyone is getting a bar code tattoo. This tattoo allows you to be scanned and instantly a person can see your driver's license, bank accounts, and any criminal records. There are some that don't want the tattoo, but soon there may be a world where you either have one, or you can't do anything.
This book had a lot of promise, and I actually really liked it. It's a good mystery/sci-fi thriller. Kayla Reed, the main character, is realistic, and a good main character.
And then it all went wrong.
Meet, The Bar Code Rebellion.
In this sequel, there are magical telepathic powers (woah! Where the carp* did that come from?), clones spliced with bird DNA (once again, what the carp?), and a plot that wraps up in TWO PAGES. Okay. You can't wrap up a series in TWO PAGES. And then we kept meeting new people-- new important people-- and then leaving them behind and never talking about them again. What the carp?
This book once again follows Kayla, but now she's out in the wild resisting the now mandatory bar code tattoo. While in the wild, she goes through all that crazy stuff I listed above.
This book had SO MUCH POTENTIAL! To the point that I actually wished I could rewrite the book for her! But it was so disappointing.
All in all, I wish I could say read the first one and not the second, but the first one ends all cliffhangerish, and it would be really annoying to not know what happens. So I'm going to have to say skip this series. Which is unfortunate, because it had such potential.

*Carp is not a typo. I have a thing against saying "Crap," so I just switched around the letters. Now "carp" has kind of become my word.
That does sound like an interstig story idea. Its too bad the second book was such a disappointment!
ReplyDeletehow was it a disappointment-- i do agree that is wsn't as good as the first but i still thought it was very good, i do wish though they didn't put the ending in that book because i kind of wish they made a third one but it is kind of too late now... but still i thought the 2nd one was good too
DeleteI remember that I got Bar Code Rebellion a while back and didn't finish it. I was kind of confused and didn't realize until a year ago that it was a sequel haha.

This reminds me of that TV show "Dark Angel" (with Jessica Alba) - I think there were some genetically-enhanced soldiers who had bar codes on the back of their necks. It was an intriguing show! If you like sci-fi (but not too sci-fi-ish), a favorite of mine was Shade's Children by Garth Nix.

I haven't heard of this series and it's a shame it is such a let down after the promising first book.
ReplyDeleteyour description of the second book makes me think of the book Uglies. That's sad that the series ended so badly.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too into sci-fi, but it does sound like an interesting story idea. Too bad it ended horribly!
ReplyDeleteThats really sad. I hate bad sequels. (and the carp thing is actually pretty cool.)
ReplyDeleteI started reading The Barcode Tattoo, it seemed really interesting, but I took it back to my school library, and never picked it up again.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, xalwaysdreamx, I really love Dark Angel. I had no idea it was something like that in the book. Maybe I'll pick it up again.
The plot sounds so good--too bad the sequel wasn't up to par. I hate when that happens! I would have liked to read them, too :[
ReplyDeleteah so I see you don't have my comment posted. I wonder why? Perhaps it was the fact that I didn't exactly agree with your review. Like I said before, The Barcode Tattoo Series is possibly one of the most exciting things I've ever read
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't that you didn't agree with my review, it's that you were bitter and nasty.
ReplyDeleteI'm fine if you don't like my review. I thought the Bar Code Tattoo series was very good. I don't regret reading it. However, I do believe it went a little crazy. That's just my opinion, you clearly have a different one. That's fine.
In fact, I haven't really had anyone to talk about this series with, since I don't know anyone who's read it. If you'd like, I'd love to get your perspective. Feel free to e-mail me: Books@Squeakybooks.com
ReplyDeleteI just finished the Bar Code Tattoo last the morning and thought it was pretty good. I was undecided about reading the second one but it ends as a cliffhanger so I was trying to find a summary of the Bar Code Rebellion and came across your blog. Hmmm... maybe I won't read the second one after all. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy one person agrees with me! It was the best book I ever read. I want the secound book but I can only find it when it's a pack

ReplyDeleteI did a review on the Bar Code Tattoo a while back... and pretty much said the same thing. SO much potential, that just didn't happen. Its sad really.
ReplyDeleteI thought about getting book two, but most likely won't unless I see it on a very cheap sale.
Thanks for the honesty!
I really liked the barcode tattoo and I really wanted to know what happens in the second one but after reading these comments I think it's better that I don't lol
ReplyDeleteI read both books and I personally liked them both
ReplyDeletei just finished the last book O MY GOD it was great i loved the series and i even got one of my friends to read it.
ReplyDeleteloved the hunger games cant wait to read these
ReplyDeleteI really loved the barcode tattoo.. im a christian so after i read it i looked up the mark of the beast in Revelations 19:20.. also it explains it more in Revelations 13.. i really want to read the 2nd one to learn what happens.. but i believe someone shld read the book insead of just listening to reviews to not read it.. cuz everyone has opinions.. (not trying to be rude.. js)
ReplyDeletethere WILL be a barcode tattoo 3,called the barcode prophecy.it will come out sept/oct.But i heard a rumor it would come out on september first.
ReplyDeletewhat is she talking about these books are great ive resd them all and they were awsome
ReplyDeleteI read the Barcode Tattoo and i really enjoyed it. i acctually did it for a school project but it was so good i thought i would read the second one too, but after reading your review and others, i'm not so sure. I say read the first book, you should enjoy it. However don't know about the second. can you believe that the second book was acctually rated 4 stars and the first was only 3 1/2? if what you say is true, which i don't doubt, then that makes no sense. oh well :D
ReplyDeletei loved this book too!!! i really wanted to do it as a book project but the requirements for the project was too hard for this book so i chose the healing spell by kimberly griffiths little which is pretty good but not as good as this.... I have been trying to get my friends to read it but so far i don't think anyone has>> i am determined to get one friend to read it at least!!! wish my luck
ReplyDeleteSounds good. Maybe I'll just read the first. IDK.
ReplyDeleteThe second book was just as good as the first. You need to read carefully because there are several parts that talk about the genetic cloning and splicing of animal genes with human genes etc. Also, they clearly explain the telepathy in the first book, it is no shock that it is also in the second book. It is explained as an adaptation to the new world. I am disappointed that you so easily criticized a book that you obviously didn't read very carefully.
ReplyDeleteWe're all entitled to our opinion. Also, it's been FOUR YEARS since I read this book. Maybe my opinion would be different now. I'm amazed at how many comments this review gets regularly.
ReplyDeleteI just saw there's a third book. The Bar Code Prophecy.
