Life of Pi Movie

Now, I absolutely ADORE Life of Pi. It is one of the only books I read for a high school English class that I actually liked, let alone loved. So I have abosolutely no shame in sharing how I feel about this movie:

It ticks me off.

The whole point of this book is that YOU CAN'T SEE IT. You have to READ it.

There's no way they're going to be able to do it justice. The ending will come off as cheap hollywood tricks instead of the beautiful story it really is.

Any other Life of Pi lovers/haters out there? How do you feel about them making a movie?

Pages: 323

Goodreads Page: Click here
Summary:
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self.

To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live.

But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?
Blurb: Very real and gripping. Started looking for escape routes.

Review: Hi everyone! It’s River! I just finished one of the ARC’s Enna asked me to read (I’m new to the world of book reviewing, so holding an ARC in my hands made me feel important in a convoluted sort of way and I have to mention it) called “This is Not a Test” and this is my first book review ever, so bear with me.

“This is Not a Test” is the story of Sloane, a suicidal high school girl who takes refuge in her high school with five other teens in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Her father was abusive, her sister has abandoned her and now suicide is out of the question for Sloane. She must struggle with her own desire to die, memories of her broken family and the students she is now trapped with.

Overall, “This is Not a Test” was an enjoyable read, outside of the smothering “Omigosh, what if this actually happened” panic I feel every time I read zombie apocalypse books like this (I actually started looking for escape routes from my apartment). The book was so real to me; the characters acted like the panicked high schoolers they were—and for the most part, nothing was over the top; it was easy for me to imagine myself there in the high school auditorium with them, trying to sleep on gymnastics mats while zombies flail against the doors.

The book has a certain quality that keeps you from getting restless or bored with the story, because even though the vast majority takes place in one setting, I didn’t get tired of it; the characters and story moved at the perfect pace. What’s more, the story revolved around just more than the zombies outside; it dealt with raw emotion and human nature, and made me wonder what I would be like if I was forced into a situation where I had to survive just for the sake surviving.

On the downside, I never found myself super involved with the majority of the characters so when the author tried a killing spree along the lines of “I will kill everyone you ever loved”, I calmly turned the page and continued on.

The ending was rushed (however, I assume most things are going to be rushed when zombies are after you) but there were some unexpected things that happened that were refreshing to me. Overall, it ended in the perfect spot. If you like the TV series “The Walking Dead”, this is the realistic and more feminine book version.

Note: This book is for more mature readers due to heavy use of profanity and sexual scenes.

New Guest Reviewer!

This is River, and she's going to be a new guest reviewer on Squeaky Books! See what she has to say about herself:

Hi guys! My name is River and I’m a friend of Enna’s. She’s asked me to read some books and do some guest reviews for her, so you’ll see me pop up here every now and again.

I’m an eighteen year old college student studying political science and economics and, obviously, I also like to read. In my spare time I do freelance writing, buy betta fish, watch terrible reality television and tell exaggerated stories about my childhood spent growing up in Detroit and Brazil.

I read ridiculously fast, worship Enna, and suck at math. I will also read any book I am given and will probably enjoy it, regardless of genre or age-level. That’s pretty much me in a nutshell, so unless Enna has anything else to add, I’m going to go read a book.

You go forth and read, River!

Guys, this girl is seriously saving my bacon. She and I have very similar tastes, and she's helping me to dig my way out of my review pile! Look for reviews from her a couple times a month. You'll know it's a River-Review when the text is blue and you see this image:

If you want to give River the warm welcome she deserves, you should go follow her on twitter by clicking here! You won't regret it. She's hilarious.

Yup. That was ACTUALLY me. This was probably the most exciting thing I have ever done in my life. I still can't stop thinking about it.

Five Year Blogoversary!

I almost can't believe it. I've made it to my five year blogoversary! How crazy is that?!  Tomorrow is my actual blogoversary, but since I don't post on Sundays, we're going to celebrate TODAY!

To be completely honest, I feel like Squeaky Books has always been a part of my life. It's hard to remember when I wasn't blogging. And I can't imagine ever stopping blogging. So here's hoping for at least another five years!

If you've been around for my blogoversary in the past, you know what's coming: a guess the cover contest!!

There are only 12 covers this year, but I did my darndest to make them REALLY hard! Check out the images, then check out the rules/hints below!

HINTS:
  • All of these books have not yet been released (as of 7-14-2012)
  • They will all release in 2012 or early 2013
  • All of these books are US covers (so far as I am aware)
  • Not all have been featured on Squeaky Books, but some
  • They are all books I REALLY want
Those are your only hints! And there are two prizes!

Prize #1 Fastest 100%
The first prize will go to the first person who gets ALL of the covers correct.

Prize #2 Random
I will then randomly select a winner from all participants. The more covers you get right, the more entries you get!

Both winners will get to choose any book they want from Amazon.com or TBD under $13.

Here are the details:
  • Giveaway open 7/14-7/29
  • Open International!
  • You MUST have at least one cover correct to be entered
  • You must fill out THE FORM to enter
  • DO NOT LEAVE ANSWERS IN COMMENTS
  • Multiple submissions WILL NOT COUNT. If you enter more than once, only your first submission will be counted. If you're going for the 100% prize, you have to have them all at the same time. Much more challenging that way, I think.
I'm really excited to see how y'all do! I worked really hard to try and stump you!

Audio Review: The Books of Bayern

    Author: Shannon Hale
    Narrator: Full Cast
    Genre: Fantasy
    Producer: Full Cast Audio
Books in Series: Listened to the first 3
    Story Rating:
    Audio Rating:

Story Review: Do I really need to write anything here? These books are amazing, fantastic, phenomenal. And you need to read them RIGHT NOW.

Audio Review: These books were my first experience with a full cast audio production, and I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased! I do wish that the narrators had stayed consistent between the books (I especially wish that Isi didn't have a lisp in Enna Burning) but on the whole I think the narrators are awesome. And I think the real "narrator" (the one who reads everything non-dialogue) is all kinds of awesome. Cynthia Bishop, let's be friends.

My only complaint (aside from that lisp) is that I think there is an overabundance of music. Between each chapter/passage of time is just too much for me.

If you haven't listened to a full cast production before, I strongly recommend that you start with these. They're great.

If you have listened to a different full cast production before... please tune in soon for my review of Graceling.

    Mini-Reviews (3)

Here's a few books that I read a few weeks ago and I don't remember a whole lot of details. Hence, mini-reviews! These are a great way to smoosh down that "waiting to be reviewed" list, too!

    Insurgent, Veronica Roth
    (Goodreads | Amazon)

I thought this was a great follow-up to Divergent. It was interesting, allowed us to see all new parts of Tris' world, and had only minimal amounts of sequel-phase. I also thought Veronica did a great job of portraying Tris as an imperfect character, who knows she is imperfect but is always striving to do better. The ending of this one was crazy! I had to read it 4-5 times and I still don't know what happened!

Tuesdays at the Castle, Jessica Day George
    (Goodreads | Amazon)

I just plum don't like middle grade. I tried to like this book, really. But the whole time I was reading it I knew everything would work out nice in the end, and coincidences would lead the good guys to victory. And the narrator never felt authentic to me. She was too... smart. It was like someone gave an 11-year-old a thesaurus.

    Article 5, Kristen Simmons
    (Goodreads | Amazon)

I was really hesitant to pick this one up (mostly because I have an irrational disliking toward that cover!) but I was glad I did! This was a very engaging novel that made you think about current politics, without making you feel like you were being beaten over the head with it. I wasn't sure I agreed with all the ideas in the book, but that didn't take away from me liking it. Be warned, most people are treated pretty horribly in this book.

    Struck, Jennifer Bosworth
    (Goodreads | Amazon)

In the spirit of full disclosure: this book offended me. It vilified religion in ways that were just not okay. I don't like any book that does that. After meeting Jenn, I know that she says that wasn't her intention, but it's certainly how I felt. If you'd like more details, feel free to e-mail me.

    Sisters Red, Jackson Pearce
    (Goodreads | Amazon)

I've been a huge fan of Jackson Pearce's YouTube channel for a long time. She's the one who taught me how to french braid my hair, which is now the only thing I can do to my hair since I cut it. And Sisters Red was enjoyable enough. I was really liking it (except for a couple out-of-the-blue F-bombs) until I realized that I had totally predicted the "twist." Some books I'm okay with that, but usually if I guess the "twist" it ruins the whole book. So when I finished this one I just sighed. It was good for a light read, but not quite the awesomeness I expected. I'm still definitely going to hunt down Sweetly and Fathomless though.

    Audio Review: Pendragon Series

    Author: D.J. MacHale
    Narrator: William Dufris
    Genre: Fantasy
    Producer: Brilliance Audio
Books in Series: Listened to books 1-8
    Story Rating:
    Audio Rating:

Story Review: A great series for tweens up to younger teens. A nice, safe way to move from middle grade to YA.

Audio Review: I think these are great audiobooks for younger kids. They aren't awesome. The writing isn't superb to begin with, and the narrator has a very- ahem- interesting voice whenever he is voicing a female. BUT, they are very listenable and entertaining. And something I really enjoy about them is that the narrator is very good at growing up with Bobby. The series starts when he is 14, and ends when he is around 20 (I haven't actually read the last two books yet. Almost there!). Dufris does a great job of changing from a scared teenager, to a confident and powerful young man. I applaud him for this.

Squeaky Books Birthday Bash 2012 Sign Ups!

Well, it's July. Do you know what that means? It means that it's time to start getting ready for the Squeaky Books Birthday Bash 2012!

Many of you weren't here for the Squeaky Books Birthday Bash 2010 or 2011, but if you want to see all of the fun stuff we did, you can click here for 2010 and click here for 2011.

The coolest thing about the birthday bash is that it requires a lot of interaction with other bloggers. The birthday bash isn't possible without you!

Want to know how you can participate? Well, there's one really big way:
    Be a giveaway host!
    • I hope y'all will be interested in this. Basically all you do is host a giveaway on your blog for the birthday bash. I'll write the contest post for you (or you can write it), and all you have to do is post it at the appropriate time. This way I send my readers to discover your blog, and you send your readers to discover my blog. See how it works? Last year the people who hosted contests for the Birthday Bash gained an average of around 100 followers/subscribers/readers, and you get some major love from me personally.
    • Contest Host Requirements: Due to the fact that there is a giveaway nearly every day during the birthday bash, I am asking that contest-hosts donate toward the cost of their book. There are three options: buy their book and mail it to me, send me an Amazon.com gift card (which is easy and anonymous), or send your book directly to whoever wins your giveaway using the Book Depository. Most books range from $10-$13. I will send you a list of books you can choose from, so you can be sure to host a contest for a book you're actually interested in. I ask that you send the book to me/send me a gift card because last year there was some problems with so many hosts mailing out the books. Things got lost. I take care of all the shipping if you choose the Amazon gift card option.
    • If you don't want to donate you can still sign-up to host a contest, but you will only ACTUALLY host one if I can find a prize for you. This is not a guarantee. the only way to be SURE that you will host a contest is if you donate a book.
    • You can be international, a book blogger, a non-book blogger, etc. You just have to have a blog.
    • The birthday bash will run August 22nd - September 22nd. Contest hosts will be assigned a book in early August.
All right, if after reading ALL OF THAT, you're still interested, you can fill out the form. You don't have to fill out the form to be a shipping-donor, just click the "donate" button off to the side. You can fill out the form below, or CLICK HERE if you want to see it in a separate window.

THANK YOU! I'm hoping the bash will be a roaring success. I'm currently contacting some fabulous authors in hopes of interviews/guest posts/more giveaways. Fingers crossed!
