Comedic Research
I haven't had much time to read or post lately, because (aside from the time doing homework) I have been spending my time researching comedic plays. I'm looking for a really good (but fairly simple) comedic play. Here's what I have/want to read so far
Jitters, by David French
Laughing Stock, by Charles Morey
The Nerd, by Larry Shue
Strange Boarders, by George Batson and Jack Kirkland
All Because of Agatha, by Jonathan Troy
Amateurs, by Tom Griffin
The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild, Paul Zindel
Do you know any really great comedic plays? Have you heard of these plays? Have you seen these plays? If you do/have, please post your comments!

I have not heard of or seen any of the plays you listed, but allow me to suggest the work of Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, particularly). There are written versions of the plays, the originals, and screen versions as well.
ReplyDeleteOne of the funniest plays I've seen on-stage was The Foreigner, unfortunately I don't remember the author.
Oscar is another SO funny one that I saw first as a movie (starring Sylvester Stallone).
And for short, comedic writing that could be adapted into plays, I imagine, my favorite author is P.G. Wodehouse. I would be very shocked if some of it has not been adapted already.
Ooh. Oscar Wilde. I'd forgotten about him.
ReplyDeleteThe Foreigner was on my list, I can't remember why I took it off.
Thanks so much, Alysa!
I second The Foreigner. It may be the funniest play I've ever seen. I also love Noises Off and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
ReplyDeleteIf you're researching comedies, why don't you try the ancient Greeks? They pretty much made up the idea of the comedy, and some of Aristophanes' works are pretty hilarious. But they can be a bit obscene, so I'd watch out for that.
ReplyDeleteI ADORE Noises Off (the old version) with all my being! And I checked out Foreigner today.
ReplyDeleteI'm not one for classic plays. I prefer things more contemporary.
Here are three of my favorite comedic plays:
ReplyDeleteSee How They Run by Philip King
She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith
Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring
The Importance of Being Earnest - HILARIOUS ^_^
ReplyDeleteCyrano deBergarac is also pretty funny.

ReplyDeleteMuch Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare is pretty hilarious
ReplyDeleteI didn't find The Importance of Bieng Earnest all that funny, I found it rather boring
Much Ado IS funny. I think it may be my favorite Shakespeare.
